Purpose Driven Gospel

People_DiverseGroup_SmallIf you think that “Purpose Driven Gospel” is a phrase that I just made up, then you may be correct.  But before you dismiss this post, let me expound on the phrase a little by asking you a question: Are you driven by pride, pleasure, or purpose? Please, don’t answer this question too quickly… Instead take some time to reflect.

As I reflected on this question myself, I could see that at  various times during this past year, I’ve been driven by all three.  Today, I’m ”proud” to announce that I’m hardly influenced by pride anymore, but by the same token, I’m almost ashamed to admit that there were too many days when I found myself in the passenger’s seat where pleasure was doing more driving than purpose.  I ate more than I should have eaten and I was guilty of spending way too much time on the couch looking at TV.   Throw a gadget or some new technology into the mix and I can now see how easily I got sidetracked and distracted for hours doing things that brought me mind numbing pleasure.

Over the past year I have been looking at Biblical characters and God has done an excellent job in these studies helping me to see that in many ways we are no different than some of these people in the Bible. We are people who are prone to sin, but still people who are given the grace and the ability to do wonderful things in the name of the Lord if we will to do so.  There is always the potential for the good, the bad, and the ugly to manifest in all of us and what usually get’s manifested is determined by who’s in the driver’s seat.  The Bible tells us pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18) and that the pursuit of pleasure is never satisfied (Proverbs 21:17-MSG).  The Bible also tells us many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails (Prov 19:21-NIV).

So, again, the question I’d like to ask is, are you driven by pride, pleasure are purpose?  Rick Warren explains to us, in his book, “Purpose Driven Life”, that even before the universe was created, God had you in mind and you were created for a purpose.  For everything  got starting in Him and finds its purpose in Him (Col 1:16-MSG). One of the purposes that Rick Warren says we were created for is missions.  That’s simply sharing the Gospel and leading people to Christ.  So make it your purpose to help God fulfill one of His purposes for you this year by sharing the Gospel.
